French classes — A1 to B2
DELF aligned, for Campus France applicants.
Why French
About 300 million people speak French, and it is official in 29 countries across every continent. It is a working language of the UN, UNESCO, NATO and the Red Cross.
For our students there are two practical reasons: studying in France through Campus France, and Canadian immigration, where French proficiency is worth a substantial number of points under Express Entry.
The two exams, and which one you need
DELF is the French Ministry of Education's certification, recognised worldwide and valid for life. Four levels — A1, A2, B1, B2 — each testing listening, reading, writing and speaking separately. This is the one for university admission.
TEF is administered by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and is the one used for immigration, particularly to Canada. It scores you on a scale from A1 to C2 rather than passing or failing a level.
The levels
- A1 — beginner. Everyday expressions, introducing yourself, simple questions about where you live and who you know.
- A2 — elementary. Routine tasks, short social exchanges, describing daily life, work and surroundings.
- B1 — moderate. Handling most situations while travelling, holding a conversation on familiar topics, expressing an opinion.
- B2 — the university level. Fluent enough for regular interaction with native speakers without strain on either side, and for defending an argument.
- C1 and C2 — fluent and expert. Rarely required for admission, occasionally for employment.
Questions we are actually asked
DELF or TEF?
DELF for studying in France. TEF for Canadian immigration. If you need both, do TEF second — the preparation overlaps and the scoring is more forgiving.
What level does Campus France expect?
B2 for a French-taught programme. English-taught programmes in France do not require it, though daily life still does.
Does French help with Canada PR?
Substantially. French proficiency carries additional points under Express Entry, and there are French-specific draws with lower cut-offs.
