Why Singapore

The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University are two of the top fifteen universities in the world, four hours from Hyderabad, in a country that runs in English and has built its economy on exactly the fields Indian students study — finance, computing, engineering, logistics and biomedical science.

Beyond the two public giants sit SMU, SUTD and a set of private institutions that deliver British and Australian degrees locally at a lower cost. The quality gap between the tiers is real, and we say so.

Fees at the public universities are ₹25 to ₹40 lakh a year for a Master's. The trade is a short flight, a familiar culture, and a job market with a large Indian professional community.

Life in Singapore

Safe, clean, hot, and expensive to rent in. Most students live in university housing or shared HDB flats in the outer estates. Food is cheap and excellent; everything else is not. Budget ₹1 to ₹1.3 lakh a month.

Little India, Tamil as an official language, and direct flights home make it the easiest destination on this site to settle into.

Intakes

  • August — the main intake. All programmes at the public universities.
  • January — a smaller intake, some Master's programmes.
NUS and NTU close applications for August between January and March, and they are selective. Private institutions run several intakes a year.

Tests and requirements

  • English — IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL; often waived for a degree taught in English
  • GRE / GMAT — asked for by many NUS and NTU Master's and by the MBAs
  • Degree — a good Bachelor's, usually first-class or high second for the public universities
The public universities are competitive. A 7.5 CGPA is a realistic floor for NUS and NTU engineering Master's; private institutions are more open.

The Student's Pass

After admission the institution registers you on the SOLAR system and you apply for the Student's Pass online. It is normally granted within a few weeks, and collected in person after arrival.

  • Admission letter and SOLAR registration
  • Passport and photographs
  • Proof of funds for tuition and a year of living costs
  • Academic records and test scores
  • Medical examination on arrival

After you graduate

Graduates can take a Long-Term Visit Pass for up to a year to look for work, and an Employment Pass once hired above the salary threshold. Singapore favours graduates of its own universities in that process, which is part of what the fees buy.

Questions we are actually asked

How hard is it to get into NUS or NTU?

Hard. They rank alongside the best in the world and select accordingly. We tell you honestly where you stand before you pay an application fee.

Are private institutions worth it?

For some degrees and some students, yes — a recognised British or Australian degree at a lower cost. The employer recognition is lower than NUS or NTU and we say so.

Can I work while studying?

16 hours a week during term at approved institutions, full-time in vacations.

How much does it cost?

₹25 to ₹40 lakh a year in fees at the public universities, plus ₹12 to ₹15 lakh a year to live.

Can I stay afterwards?

A Long-Term Visit Pass gives up to a year to find work; an Employment Pass follows a qualifying job offer.

Is it far?

Four hours from Hyderabad. The closest serious destination there is.
