Why Finland

Finland runs one of the best education systems in the world, teaches hundreds of Master's programmes in English, and is short of skilled people. Aalto, Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu and the universities of applied sciences are strong in technology, design, energy, wireless, forestry and business.

Tuition for non-EU students is €8,000 to €18,000 a year, and nearly every university offers scholarships that cut it in half or to nothing for good applicants. The cost of the year is often lower than the headline suggests.

The post-study permit is generous — two years to find work — and the government has made it easier, not harder, since 2022.

Life in Finland

Helsinki is the most expensive city; Tampere, Turku, Oulu and Jyväskylä are cheaper and every one of them is a proper university town. Student housing foundations offer rooms well below market rent. Student meals are subsidised to a few euros.

It is dark and cold from November to February. Finns cope with saunas, cross-country skis and coffee. So will you.

Intakes

  • August / September — the main intake, with a single joint application window in January.
  • January — a small number of programmes, mostly at universities of applied sciences.
The joint application in January is the whole game: one form, up to six programmes, closes in two to three weeks. Miss it and the next chance is a year away.

Language and requirements

  • English — IELTS 6.5 or equivalent; some programmes accept a degree taught in English as proof
  • Degree — a 3-year Indian Bachelor's is accepted for most Master's
  • Entrance exams or portfolios — used by some programmes instead of grades alone; design and architecture in particular

The residence permit

Students apply for a residence permit for studies online through Enter Finland and give biometrics at VFS. Since 2022 it is granted for the length of the degree, not renewed yearly.

  • Admission letter and proof of tuition paid or scholarship
  • Proof of funds — about €800 a month, €9,600 for the year
  • Health insurance covering the stay
  • Passport and academic records

After you graduate

Graduates can stay for two years to look for work, and many find it before they graduate — Finnish universities are tightly connected to the companies around them. Permanent residence is possible after four years, and study time counts toward it in full.

Questions we are actually asked

How much are fees?

€8,000 to €18,000 a year for non-EU students, with scholarships of 50% to 100% common for strong applicants.

Do I need Finnish?

Not for an English-taught degree. For staying and working afterwards it helps enormously, and universities offer free courses.

Can I work while studying?

Yes — 30 hours a week on average during term, no limit in holidays.

How long can I stay after graduating?

Two years on a job-search permit, with study time counting toward permanent residence.

When is the application?

The joint application window opens in early January and closes within weeks. Everything has to be ready before it opens.

Is it very cold?

Yes. Housing is warm, transport runs, and nobody stops for the weather.
