Why Germany for pharmacists

More than 160,000 pharmacy professionals work in Germany across some 18,000 pharmacies, and enrolment has been falling while demand rises. The licensing route for foreign graduates is standardised and transparent, which is not true everywhere.

The licence is called Approbation, and with it you can practise independently. Without it you cannot, whatever your degree says.

What Approbation requires

• A recognised pharmacy degree — equivalent to the German Apotheker qualification
• B2 general German, and C1 Fachsprachprüfung — the professional language exam for pharmacists
• Practical training — a 12-month Praktisches Jahr, if your prior training is not fully equivalent
• Police clearance and medical fitness certificates
• Certified German translations of every document

The Fachsprachprüfung, in detail

The professional language exam is three twenty-minute parts: a simulated pharmacist-to-patient conversation, pharmacy documentation, and a pharmacist-to-pharmacist or pharmacist-to-doctor exchange. It tests whether you can communicate safely in a German healthcare setting, which is a different skill from passing a C1 exam.

If your curriculum does not match

The authority compares your degree against the German pharmacy curriculum. Fully equivalent means you proceed to licensing. Partially equivalent means either an adaptation period or a Knowledge Examination — an oral exam covering pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacy law and patient counselling. Passing it grants Approbation.

Professional experience can offset curriculum differences in many cases, which is worth arguing properly in the application rather than leaving to chance.
