Why the United States

The USA has more universities in the world's top hundred than every other country combined, and a research budget to match. For an Indian engineer or scientist it remains the destination where the best labs, the largest companies and the most generous graduate funding sit in one place.

It is also the most expensive route on this site, and the one where the gap between a good decision and a bad one is widest. A funded MS at a state university and an unfunded one at a private university can differ by ₹40 lakh over two years for the same degree title. Choosing well is the whole job.

Master's programmes are two years, taught, and usually let you work as a research or teaching assistant — which is how a large number of Indian students bring the cost down to something ordinary.

Life in the USA

Costs vary more by city than by country elsewhere: a college town in the Midwest or the South can be half the price of Boston or the Bay Area for the same quality of programme. Most Indian students share apartments off campus after the first semester.

Health insurance is compulsory and is usually bought through the university. Budget for it separately — it is not in the tuition figure.

Intakes

  • Fall (August / September) — the main intake. Almost every programme, and almost all the funding.
  • Spring (January) — secondary. Fewer programmes, less assistantship money, but a real option for somebody who missed Fall.
Fall deadlines are early: December to February for a start the following August. GRE and TOEFL have to be done before that. Begin 12 to 15 months ahead.

Tests and requirements

  • English — TOEFL iBT 80 to 100 or IELTS 6.5 to 7.0, depending on the university; Duolingo is accepted by many since 2020
  • GRE — still asked for by many engineering and science Master's, optional at a growing number; GMAT for most MBAs
  • Degree — a 4-year Bachelor is the norm; a 3-year degree is accepted by many universities with a WES evaluation, and rejected by some
Three strong recommendation letters and a specific statement of purpose matter more here than anywhere else. Admissions committees read them.

The F-1 visa

The university issues an I-20 once you are admitted and have shown funds for the first year. You pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160, and attend an interview at the consulate — Hyderabad has one. The interview is short and decides everything.

  • Valid passport and the I-20
  • SEVIS fee receipt and DS-160 confirmation
  • Proof of funds — bank statements, loan sanction, sponsor letters
  • Academic records and test scores
  • Evidence of ties to India and a clear plan for after the degree
Appointment slots in India fill months ahead of Fall. Book the moment the I-20 arrives.

After you graduate

Optional Practical Training gives 12 months of work authorisation after any degree, and STEM graduates get a further 24 — three years in total to find an employer willing to sponsor an H-1B. That lottery is the uncertain part of the American route, and the reason many students treat a STEM Master's as the safer bet.

Questions we are actually asked

Is a 3-year Indian Bachelor's accepted?

By many universities, usually with a WES or ECE credential evaluation. Some top programmes still ask for 16 years of education. We check per programme before you apply.

How much does it cost in total?

Anywhere from ₹25 lakh to ₹80 lakh for a two-year Master's, depending on the university and the city. Assistantships and scholarships can bring a public university down to the lower end.

Is the GRE compulsory?

No longer everywhere, but a good score still helps at the universities that read it and for assistantships. We tell you programme by programme.

Can I work while studying?

20 hours a week on campus during term, full-time in breaks. Off-campus work needs authorisation and is usually the CPT internship in the second year.

What is OPT?

Work authorisation after your degree — 12 months, plus 24 more for STEM fields. It is the bridge to an H-1B.

How early should I start?

Twelve to fifteen months before the Fall you want to join. Tests, recommendations and the SOP take longer than anybody expects.
