Germany Opportunity Card
The points-based route to look for work in Germany on the ground.
What the Opportunity Card is
The Chancenkarte is a residence permit that lets a qualified non-EU professional enter Germany to look for work — without a job offer first. It came into force in 2024 as part of Germany's reformed skilled immigration rules.
- Enter Germany with no prior job offer
- Stay for up to 12 months initially
- Work part-time, up to 20 hours a week, while you search
- Take trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer
- Convert to a work permit or EU Blue Card once you are hired
Two ways to qualify
Pathway 1 — recognised skilled worker. A university degree, or a vocational qualification of at least two years, fully recognised as equivalent to the German qualification. No points needed.
Pathway 2 — the points route. A qualification, plus German at A1 or English at B2, plus at least six points from: partial recognition of your qualification, a shortage occupation, work experience (two years, or five), German language level, English at C1 or above, age (under 35, or 35–40), a previous continuous six-month stay in Germany, or an eligible spouse.

Money, and how long it takes
You must show funds covering about twelve months of living costs. The official monthly benchmark is updated periodically; for 2026 it is €1,091 net a month. It can be proven by a blocked account, a formal declaration of commitment from a sponsor, bank savings, a part-time job offer, or a combination.
The visa fee is around €75 for adults, and processing runs from about four weeks to three months once a complete file is submitted.
Questions we are actually asked
Do I need six points if I am already a recognised skilled worker?
No. Pathway 1 does not use the points system, though you still have to meet the financial and basic requirements.
Is German mandatory?
You need German at A1 or English at B2. German is not strictly required if your English is strong — but it is what decides whether you find qualified work once you are there.
Is there an age limit?
No fixed upper limit, but the points reward youth: more points under 35, fewer between 35 and 40, none above 40.
Can my family come with me?
Generally not on the Opportunity Card itself. Once you secure a job and move to a work permit or EU Blue Card, family reunification opens.
Is there an annual cap?
No publicly advertised hard cap. The card exists to increase Germany's intake of qualified non-EU professionals.
Where do I apply from?
The country where you legally reside — for most of our students, the German mission responsible for their region in India.
