Study in Germany
Public and private universities. What it costs, who gets in, and what to prepare.
Public universities here charge no tuition — you pay a semester contribution only. We track programmes across universities in Germany, and a counsellor will tell you which of them your CGPA actually opens — before you spend anything.
Who gets in

APS certificate is mandatory for Indian applicants - budget 6-8 weeks for it.
Backlogs. Up to 5 backlogs usually tolerated; more needs a written explanation.

Why Germany
Public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition, including to international students — and they are not a budget option. German universities rank among the world's best in engineering, automotive, renewable energy, IT, robotics, biotechnology and the applied sciences, and they are taught to a standard that is famously unsentimental.
Many master's programmes are taught entirely in English, so German is not a prerequisite for admission. It is, however, what decides whether you can work alongside your degree and stay afterwards — which is why we push it early rather than at the end.
The industrial link is real rather than decorative. BMW, Siemens, Bosch, SAP, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen run internships, thesis projects and graduate hiring through the universities themselves.
What Germany asks of an Indian applicant
- A four-year Bachelor — sixteen years of education. A three-year degree needs a recognised bridge or a Studienkolleg year.
- The APS certificate is mandatory for Indian applicants. Budget six to eight weeks and start it before anything else.
- IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88.
- German A1–A2 for daily life, even on an English-taught course.
- A blocked account holding a year of living costs, frozen before the visa interview.
Deadlines
Winter intake closes 15 July; summer intake closes 15 January. Those are the university deadlines — the APS, the blocked account and the visa appointment all have to happen before them, not after.
Working, and staying
Students may work 20 hours a week during term. After graduating you can stay to look for qualified work, and from a qualified job the route runs through the EU Blue Card to permanent residence. German language level is the main thing that decides how quickly that happens.
Questions we are actually asked
Is public university in Germany really free?
Tuition at public universities is free or close to it in most federal states, including for international students. You still pay a semester contribution of roughly €150–€350, which usually includes a public transport pass, and you still have to fund your living costs — which is what the blocked account is for.
Dois-je parler allemand si mon cursus est en anglais ?
Not for admission. Yes for everything else: a part-time job, a landlord, a doctor's appointment, and the work permit afterwards. A1 before you fly and B1 within the first year is the pattern that works.
What is the APS certificate?
A verification of your academic documents run by the German embassy's APS office. It is mandatory for Indian applicants and takes six to eight weeks. Every application you make will ask for it.
My CGPA is below 7.5 Is Germany closed to me?
No. Public universities publish different bars, and several accept German grade equivalents of 2.7 to 3.2 — some publish no fixed minimum at all. Tell a counsellor your actual number and they will tell you which universities it opens, before you pay for anything.
How many backlogs are acceptable?
Up to five is usually tolerated. More than that needs a written explanation, and it is worth writing it properly rather than hoping nobody looks.
