Why Australia

Eight of Australia's universities sit in the world's top hundred, the degrees are recognised everywhere, and the country has the most generous post-study work rights of any English-speaking destination — two to four years, depending on the degree and where you studied.

Master's programmes are 1.5 to 2 years and practical by design: engineering, IT, nursing, business analytics, public health and construction management are the fields Indian students choose most, and the ones the job market rewards.

It is not cheap. Tuition is ₹20 to ₹35 lakh a year at the big universities, and Sydney and Melbourne are expensive to live in. Regional universities cost less and carry longer work rights.

Life in Australia

Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide each have large Indian communities; Adelaide and Perth are noticeably cheaper. Most students share houses. The climate is kind, the cities are safe, and public transport is student-discounted.

Overseas Student Health Cover is compulsory for the length of the visa and is bought before you apply for it.

Intakes

  • February — the main intake. Every programme.
  • July — the second. Most programmes, and a real intake rather than a leftover one.
  • November — a handful of universities and pathways.
Apply four to six months ahead of the intake. The visa itself can take one to three months, so the offer needs to be in hand early.

Tests and requirements

  • English — IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for most Master's; PTE Academic is widely accepted and often faster to book
  • Degree — a 3-year Indian Bachelor's is accepted for most Master's
  • Genuine Student requirement — a written statement explaining why this course, why Australia, and what you will do afterwards
The Genuine Student statement is where most Indian refusals happen. It is read carefully. We draft it with you, not for you.

The student visa (subclass 500)

You apply online after the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment. Funds are checked: a year of living costs (set by the government and revised most years), first-year tuition, and travel.

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Genuine Student statement
  • Proof of funds — savings, education loan, or a sponsor
  • OSHC health cover for the visa period
  • English test result and academic records
  • Medical examination

After you graduate

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives two years of work rights after a Master's by coursework, three after a Master's by research, and an extra year or two for regional study. It is the standard route into skilled migration, and the reason Australia is on this site's Migrate menu as well.

Questions we are actually asked

Is a 3-year degree enough?

Yes, for most Master's programmes. Some — engineering in particular — want a 4-year degree or relevant work experience.

How many hours can I work?

48 hours a fortnight during term, unlimited in scheduled breaks.

What is the Genuine Student requirement?

A statement, assessed by the visa officer, that you intend to study and have thought it through. It replaced the old GTE rule in 2024 and it is decisive.

How long can I stay after graduating?

Two years after a coursework Master's, three after a research Master's, longer for regional campuses.

Which cities are cheapest?

Adelaide, Perth and regional campuses. Sydney and Melbourne are the most expensive by a wide margin.

When should I start?

Eight to ten months before the intake, so the offer, the OSHC and the visa have room.
