Why Ireland
Ireland is the only English-speaking country left in the EU, which is a strategic advantage rather than a slogan: an internationally recognised degree, taught in English, with access to the European job market attached to it.
The job market is the other half of the argument. Google, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Pfizer, Amazon, Intel, Deloitte and EY all run European headquarters or major operations here, in a country of five million people. That density produces internships and graduate roles at a rate the population would not suggest.
Teaching emphasises critical thinking, industry-aligned curriculum and practical work — real projects, placements and research collaboration in technology, pharmaceuticals, finance, business analytics and data science.
Life in Ireland
Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick are the student cities. Dublin is the most expensive by a wide margin and its accommodation market is genuinely tight — student residences, shared apartments, private rentals and homestays all fill early, and planning ahead is not optional advice here.
Private medical insurance is required for the whole of your stay. Universities run on-campus health centres, counselling and student support alongside it. Part-time work is available and commonly used to manage living costs.
Intakes
- September — the primary intake. The largest, with the widest choice of programmes at every level.
- January — secondary. Selected bachelor's, master's and diploma programmes.
- Some private institutions offer additional start dates through the year.
English requirements
- IELTS Academic — 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 for bachelor's; 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for master's
- PTE Academic — typically 50–58 for bachelor's, 58–65+ for master's
- TOEFL iBT — equivalent scores accepted for most programmes
- Duolingo — accepted by many institutions for admission, but may not be accepted for the visa
What the study visa needs
More than 90 days of study needs the Irish Study Visa — the D visa.
- Offer letter from a recognised institution
- Evidence of tuition paid — at minimum the first instalment
- Proof of funds for living expenses and remaining tuition
- Medical insurance
- Passport, academic transcripts and English test results
- A statement of purpose setting out your study goals and plans
After you graduate
The Third Level Graduate Programme lets you stay and work full-time: up to 12 months after a Level 8 bachelor's degree, up to 24 months after a Level 9 master's or higher.
From there the route runs into a Critical Skills Employment Permit, a General Employment Permit, or long-term residence. It is one of the more clearly structured paths in Europe from student to settled professional.
Questions we are actually asked
How long can I stay after graduating?
Two years on the Third Level Graduate Programme after a master's, one year after a bachelor's.
Is Ireland in the Schengen area?
No. An Irish study visa does not give you Schengen travel, which surprises people who have planned weekend trips around it.
How many hours can I work?
Up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours during holidays.
Which courses do international students take?
Engineering, IT, business, data science, finance, biotechnology, nursing and hospitality are the most in demand.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes. Private medical insurance is mandatory for the whole of your stay.
Can I bring dependants?
Students on postgraduate programmes may, under certain conditions.
How competitive is admission?
Competitive at the top universities, particularly for STEM and business. Applying early is the main thing within your control.
