The shortage is the opportunity

About 1.3 million nurses work in Germany, and more than 35,000 posts are unfilled — a figure projected to pass 200,000 by 2030. Hospitals, clinics and elderly-care homes are recruiting internationally because they have no alternative.

For a qualified Indian nurse that means a stable salary, a regulated 38–40 hour week with night and weekend allowances, and a route to permanent residence.

Starting salaries run about €2,500–€3,500 a month, rising with experience and shift allowances. Living costs are typically €800–€1,200 a month depending on the city.

What you need

  • A nursing qualification — B.Sc or M.Sc Nursing, or a GNM diploma
  • German — B1 minimum, and B2 in most federal states
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Police clearance certificate

Anerkennung — getting your qualification recognised

Your Indian qualification has to be formally recognised before you can work as a registered nurse. The authority compares your training against the German standard; where gaps exist, you complete either an adaptation period (Anpassungslehrgang) or a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung).

Recognition takes two to six months, depending on the federal state and — mostly — on whether your file was complete when it went in.

  • 10th and 12th certificates, nursing degree or diploma, transcripts
  • Internship and clinical training details
  • German language certificate, B1 or B2
  • Employment and experience certificates, if you have them
  • Medical fitness and police clearance certificates
  • CV and motivation letter
  • Certified German translations of all of it
