Germany Blocked Account May Increase for Summer 2027 Intake: What Students Should Know

Students planning to study in Germany from the summer semester 2027 may need to arrange a higher blocked-account amount for their student visa.
The possible increase is connected to proposed changes in Germany’s BAföG student-support rates. Germany uses the applicable student-support amount as a basis when calculating how much money international students must show for their living expenses.
This update is relevant to:
International students applying for a German student visa for the summer semester 2027 or a later intake
Students already studying in Germany who need to renew their student residence permit
Parents and sponsors arranging funds for a student
Students applying for education loans
Indian and other non-EU students planning their Germany study budget
However, an important point must be understood: Germany has not yet officially announced the new blocked-account amounts for 2027 or 2029.

The future amounts in this article are financial-planning projections based on the proposed BAföG increases. Students must check the final amount through the German mission, Consular Services Portal, local foreigners authority or blocked-account provider before transferring money.
What is expected to change?
Germany is planning changes to BAföG financial support in several stages.
The proposed changes include:
Increasing the housing allowance from €380 to €440 per month from the summer semester 2027
Increasing the basic living allowance to €503 per month from the winter semester 2027/28
Increasing the basic living allowance further to €563 per month from the summer semester 2029
The housing allowance would therefore rise by €60 per month from summer semester 2027.
A further increase of €28 per month is proposed from winter semester 2027/28, followed by another €60 monthly increase from summer semester 2029.
These are proposed BAföG changes. The corresponding student blocked-account amounts have not yet been officially published by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Why does the BAföG increase matter to international students?
Most Indian students studying in Germany do not receive BAföG. However, the BAföG rate is still important because it is connected to the amount international students must show as proof of sufficient financial resources.
When the applicable student-support rate increases, the blocked-account requirement for a German student visa may also increase.
The current student blocked-account requirement is:
€992 per month
€11,904 for 12 months
The money is deposited into a blocked account before the visa process and is released to the student in monthly instalments after arriving in Germany and activating the account.
Current and projected student blocked-account amounts
The table below shows the current student blocked-account requirement and the projected amounts based on the proposed BAföG increases.
Period | Monthly amount | Total for 12 months | Increase from current total | Percentage increase |
Current requirement | €992 | €11,904 | — | — |
Summer semester 2027 projection | €1,052 | €12,624 | €720 | 6.05% |
Winter semester 2027/28 projection | €1,080 | €12,960 | €1,056 | 8.87% |
Summer semester 2029 projection | €1,140 | €13,680 | €1,776 | 14.92% |
Important: The amounts for 2027 and 2029 are projections. They are not yet officially confirmed student-visa requirements.
Projected amount for summer semester 2027
The proposed housing-allowance increase is €60 per month.
If this increase is added directly to the current blocked-account requirement:
Current monthly amount: €992
Proposed increase: €60
Projected monthly amount: €1,052
The projected amount for 12 months would be:
€1,052 × 12 = €12,624
This would require students to arrange an additional €720 per year compared with the current amount of €11,904.
Projected amount for winter semester 2027/28
A further increase of €28 per month is proposed from winter semester 2027/28.
The projected monthly amount would therefore increase from €1,052 to €1,080.
The estimated amount for 12 months would be:
€1,080 × 12 = €12,960
This would be €1,056 more than the current annual blocked-account requirement.
Projected amount for summer semester 2029
Another increase of €60 per month is proposed from summer semester 2029.
The projected monthly student amount would become:
€1,140 per month
The projected amount for 12 months would be:
€1,140 × 12 = €13,680
This would represent an increase of €1,776 compared with the current blocked-account requirement.
These amounts are not yet official
Students should not treat the projected amounts as confirmed visa requirements.
The final blocked-account amount may be different because:
The proposed BAföG legislation may change before approval
Additional student-support components may be revised
The Federal Foreign Office may use a different calculation
The implementation date may not exactly match the university semester
The official amount may be rounded differently
Visa authorities may introduce the new requirement based on the application date
Students should use these figures only for early financial planning.
Before transferring money, check the official German mission, Consular Services Portal and blocked-account provider.
