Why Study In Japan?

Japan is home to some of the world’s top universities, including the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, which consistently rank among the best globally. These institutions are known for their rigorous academics, research leadership and state-of-the-art facilities.

A key advantage of studying in Japan is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in industries where Japan excels. These include robotics, AI, engineering, automotive technology, computer science, biotechnology, business management, animation, fashion, hospitality and environmental sciences. Japan’s close integration of academia and industry allows students to participate in research projects, internships and practical training that enhance employability.

Japan offers a wide range of English-taught programs, especially at the master's and doctoral levels. Many universities also offer preparatory courses in Japanese language and academic skills, making the transition easier for international students.

Cost-effective education is another strong advantage. Compared to many Western countries, Japan offers affordable tuition fees and various scholarship opportunities funded by universities, the Japanese government and private organisations.

Japan’s emphasis on discipline, innovation and high educational standards makes it an excellent destination for students who seek a structured and high-quality academic environment. The country’s global economic influence ensures that graduates with Japanese qualifications stand out in the international job market.

Life In Japan?

Life in Japan offers a balance of modern urban living and cultural richness. Students experience clean, safe and well-organised cities with reliable public services, advanced technology and a high standard of living. Popular student cities include Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Nagoya, each offering unique academic and cultural experiences.

Accommodation options range from university dormitories and student housing to private apartments and homestays. University dormitories are usually more affordable and located near campuses, creating a supportive student community.

Public transportation in Japan is world-class. Trains, subways and buses are efficient, punctual and well-connected, making commuting easy even in large cities. Students often use discounted commuter passes.

Japan’s healthcare system is highly reliable. International students must enrol in the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, which significantly reduces medical costs. Universities also provide oncampus health services and counselling support.

Daily life in Japan is characterised by respect, courtesy and efficiency. Students enjoy access to museums, festivals, traditional arts, cuisine, nature parks, mountains and coastal destinations. The country offers countless opportunities to explore cultural practices such as tea ceremonies, calligraphy, martial arts and seasonal celebrations.

While Japan is technologically advanced, it also maintains strong cultural values and traditions, offering students a unique blend of old and new. This cultural diversity enriches the study experience and broadens global perspectives.

KEEP SCROLING

01

Intakes

Most Japanese universities offer two primary intakes for international students:

April Intake (Main Intake):
Major intake aligned with the Japanese academic year. Offers the widest range of courses at all levels.

September/October Intake (Secondary Intake):
Popular for English-taught programs and many international graduate programs.

Some universities and language schools also offer additional intakes throughout the year, especially for preparatory language courses.

Students are encouraged to apply 6–12 months in advance due to competitive admissions and visa processing time.

02

Language Requirements

While Japan offers many English-taught programs, language requirements vary depending on the course:

For English-Taught Programs:
• IELTS Academic: typically 6.0 for bachelor’s and 6.5 for master’s
• TOEFL iBT: accepted by most universities
• PTE Academic: accepted by selected institutions
• Cambridge English qualifications

For Japanese-Taught Programs:
• Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT): often N2 or N1
• Some programs accept N3 for foundation or preparatory courses
• University-specific language exams may apply

Students planning to work in Japan after graduation benefit greatly from learning Japanese, even if their academic program is in English.

03

Visa

International students must apply for a Student Visa (Ryugaku Visa) to study in Japan.

General visa requirements include:
• Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) issued by the university
• Valid passport
• Visa application form and photographs
• Proof of financial capacity to cover tuition and living expenses
• Admission letter
• Academic transcripts and certificates
• Statement of purpose
• Medical documents (if required)

Once approved, students receive their residence card upon arrival and must register with local municipal offices.

Glovels Overseas Consultants assists students with preparing all documents, securing the CoE, and completing the visa process efficiently.

04

Post Study Work Visa

Japan allows international graduates to remain in the country under specific work or job-seeking visas.

Options include:

Job-Hunting Visa Extension:
Graduates may apply to extend their stay for up to 1 year to search for employment.

Work Visa Categories:
Once employed, graduates can transition into categories such as:
• Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
• Highly Skilled Professional Visa
• Instructor Visa
• Researcher Visa
• Skilled Labour Visa

Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional Visa provides additional benefits such as faster residency pathways, bringing dependents and multi-year validity.

Students with Japanese language proficiency and relevant qualifications have strong employment prospects across technology, engineering, business, manufacturing, hospitality, research and education sectors.
