Why Study In Italy?

Italy offers an attractive combination of reputable universities, affordable education and unique cultural experiences. Institutions such as the University of Bologna, Sapienza University of Rome, Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino consistently rank among Europe’s top universities. Italy’s strengths lie particularly in design, fashion, architecture, engineering, fine arts, archaeology and cultural studies, making it a preferred destination for students in creative and technical fields.

Many Italian universities offer programmes entirely in English, especially at the master’s level. Tuition fees at public universities are significantly lower than in most Western European countries, and a variety of regional scholarships and fee reductions are available for international students.

Italy’s strategic location in Europe allows students to travel easily across the continent, while its rich historical heritage, cuisine, art, festivals and architecture offer an unparalleled cultural environment. With a balance of strong academics and rich lifestyle, Italy is an ideal destination for students seeking both personal and professional growth.

Life In Italy?

Life in Italy blends academic learning with vibrant cultural and social experiences. Students enjoy living in dynamic cities such as Milan, Rome, Florence, Turin, Bologna and Naples, each offering unique opportunities, historical charm and modern conveniences. Italian cities are known for their safe environments, efficient public transport networks and strong student communities.

Accommodation options include university residences, private student apartments, shared accommodations and homestays. Costs vary depending on the city, with Milan and Rome generally being more expensive than smaller university towns. Students benefit from affordable meals at university cafeterias, discounted travel passes and student reductions at museums, theatres and cultural sites.

The Italian lifestyle emphasises good food, community interaction and a balanced pace of life. Students can explore historic landmarks, local markets, coastal areas, mountains and seasonal festivals. Social life includes cafés, piazzas, student clubs, cultural events and sports activities.

Healthcare services in Italy are highly reliable. International students can register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) or use private insurance, both of which provide access to medical care. Universities also offer student support services including academic guidance, counselling and career development programmes.

KEEP SCROLING

01

Intakes

Italian universities generally offer two main intakes:

September / October (Primary Intake):
Most undergraduate and postgraduate programs begin in this period.

February / March (Secondary Intake):
Selected institutions offer limited programs starting in the second semester.

Admissions for the September intake often open in early spring. Universitaly pre-enrolment is mandatory for many non-EU students and typically begins around the same time. Students should begin preparing at least 9–12 months in advance to ensure timely documentation and visa processing.

02

Language Requirements

Language requirements depend on the medium of instruction:

For Italian-taught programs:
• Usually require at least B2 proficiency in Italian
• Accepted tests: CILS, CELI, PLIDA or university-administered tests

For English-taught programs:
• IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Cambridge English
• Minimum scores typically align with B2 (undergraduate) or C1 (competitive postgraduate
programs)

Some specialised fields such as medicine may require additional entrance tests such as IMAT.

For long-term residence options, A2 proficiency in Italian is generally the minimum requirement.

03

Visa

Non-EU students planning to study for more than 90 days require a Long-Stay National Study Visa (D Visa).

Typical visa requirements include:
• Admission letter from an Italian university
• Completed Universitaly pre-enrolment
• Proof of financial resources
• Proof of accommodation
• Health insurance
• Valid passport and academic records
• Visa fee payment

Upon arrival, students must apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within eight working days. This permit is essential for legal long-term stay.

Glovels Overseas Consultants supports students throughout admission, pre-enrolment, visa filing and residence permit procedures.

04

Post Study Work Visa

After completing a degree in Italy, graduates may apply for:

Job-Seeking / Business Start-Up Residence Permit:
• Valid for up to 12 months
• Allows graduates to seek qualified employment or start entrepreneurial activities

Upon securing suitable employment, students can convert this into:
• A work permit
• Highly skilled residence permit
• EU Blue Card (subject to salary and qualification criteria)

Some study years may count toward permanent residence, though typically only partially. Strategic planning significantly improves long-term career prospects.
